Today Saturn begins it 26-month journey through Aries, marking the start of a new 29.5 year cycle around the zodiac.
In more traditional Astrology, Saturn is considered one of the malefic planets, casting a sense of gloom over anything it touched by transit. This mindset is somewhat outdated even though a Saturn transit can bring with it some hard lessons to learn.
Saturn is “the great teacher” who enters our lives to teach us about responsibility, discipline and respect. Saturn guides us through the maturation process and along the passage of time as we age.
Saturn’s energy is staid and cautious, cold and restrictive, earnest and reliable. Saturn is the structural backbone which reinforces all that is tried and true, historical and regulatory with a belief that anything worthwhile requires hard work and perseverance.
Aries on the other hand brings the heat, drive and momentum. The first sign of the zodiac is an initiator, a pioneer, a warrior and a defender with the courage to break new ground.
The Saturn/Aries alliance isn’t a comfortable one and can be a challenge to work with. Their energy is very different and seemingly conflicting. Saturn is in “fall” in Aries which isn’t the most difficult of relationships but one where they must overcome any discomfort and figure out a way to work together.
Aries lights a fire under Saturn in an attempt to burn off some of the calcification which can keep it immobile and resistant to change. Saturn will then always attempt to temper the flame to a manageable level so the fire doesn’t get out of control. That’s how this dynamic works – Aries will get Saturn moving whilst Saturn will rein in the enthusiasm of Aries to avoid burnout.
Saturn takes comfort in the way things should be or have always been done whereas Aries wants to feel the fear and do it anyway with a “let’s just have a go” attitude.
So, until mid-April 2028, progress could feel slow as if we’re taking one step forward and two steps back and as frustrating as that can be, we will still find ourselves in forward motion and headed in the right direction. Steady progression will be more likely.
Whilst Saturn is in Aries, some of the themes we may find ourselves having to deal with:
· Asserting our own authority or position and becoming more confident in doing so.
· To be more accepting of the responsibilities that have come to lie squarely on our shoulders, either by choice or circumstance
· Taking responsibility for our actions and the impact they may have upon others and for ourselves
· Understanding that our ambitions require commitment, foresight and perseverance; to not give up when faced with obstacles or challenges which threaten to impede or derail our goals
· Defining our own boundaries and reinforcing their importance for safety and security
· Finding the courage to step beyond a comfort zone into a realm where new experiences, growth and learning await
· Recognising the wisdom held within our own personal stories and life experiences
· Delving into the root of our anger or aggression to help understand and manage these tendencies
Saturn Return – redefining life on our own terms.
Between now and April 2028, those born with their Sun in Aries will be having either their first or second Saturn Return.
The first Saturn Return is usually experienced between the ages of 28-30 and signifies a “coming of age”, becoming an “adult”, maturing and growing up. All the life lessons, learning, conditioning and experiences up to this point are held in our personal “kit bag”. It’s now time to unpack the contents and lay them out on the floor in front of us to decide which to repack and which to discard. Anything that has served its purpose, become irrelevant, outdated or no longer helpful can remain on the floor. Anything which holds value, sentiment and importance will become part of a new personal “kit bag” to carry into the next phase of life.
The second Saturn Return is usually experienced between the ages of 58-60 and signifies a “coming home” or “coming back to ourselves”. This is a point in time where we are given an opportunity to reflect upon all we have achieved; all we’ve had to do and chosen to do up to this point in our life. The years between our first and second Saturn Return seem to be where life is at its fullest, most challenging and most rewarding. It’s where we learn so much about who we are as an individual, partner, parent, colleague, leader, follower and everything in between. Our personal “kit bag” now weighs a ton and it’s time, once again, to lay the contents out on the floor to reflect and reminisce upon life so far. The choices we make now are different and will define the third phase of our lives. Beyond our second Saturn Return is our encore performance where we get to write the script with ourselves in the lead role.
Jamie Lee Curtis said it perfectly when turning 60 – “if not now, then when?” - the perfect mantra to write across the back of our re-versioned personal kit bag.
